Team for Kids Fundraiser

My daughter has reached her fundraising goal of $2500 for Team for Kids! lailakujala.com donated over $500 for the cause. $50 pays for an exercise program for one child/year, which means my donation will enable 10 children to participate in NYRR Foundation programs that link the sport of running to success in school and life. I am happy I was able to be part of this good cause.

1983 I got an acceptance letter to run the NYC Marathon - what exciting news it was! However the day of the run was cold and rainy and as I was five months pregnant with my daughter I decided not to run. Now my daughter is training for the marathon and I can take part in her excitement by supporting her cause.

Donations 7/17/09

As of today http://www.lailakujala.com/ has donated $113 towards fighting childhood obesity:
1 cat $25
2 set of cards $12
1 bird of healing $20
1 turtle and 1 set of cards $32
1 horse $24

I am posting here a few sample Thank you letters from NYRRC:
Dear Ms. Kujala:
Thank you for making a donation on behalf of Celia Kujala as part of her fund-raising quest as a Team for Kids member running the ING New York City Marathon 2009. Your generous donation of $20.00 * will enable more children to participate in NYRR Foundation programs that link the sport of running to success in school and life.
Your contribution will aid us in our ability to establish running-based fitness and character building programs in schools and community centers that strengthen young bodies, minds and spirits. Currently more than 100,000 children of all fitness and athletic abilities participated in NYRR Foundation programs this school year, yet there is an urgent need to serve thousands more.
Your support will help bring the values, benefits and special features of our programs to additional youth and make a meaningful difference in many young lives. We are grateful for your kindness and pledge to provide the highest quality of service with your support. We invite you to visit our website, http://www.tfkworldwide.org/, to learn more about our life-enhancing mission and dynamic work in communities around the world.
Yours in health and fitness,
Cliff Sperber Executive Director
New York Road Runners Foundation

In November my daughter will be running NYC Marathon as a member of Team for Kids, a New York Road Runners Foundation's team of volunteers who are raising money to help end childhood obesity. I will be joining the cause by donating all the money from my July Etsy sales for Team for Kids. I hope you will join us in supporting this great cause. For this month I will have FREE SHIPPING as well.

This is what my daughter wrote:

"This fall I will be running the ING New York City Marathon with Team for Kids. In addition to the thrill of running my first marathon (!), I am excited to have the opportunity to play a small role in ending childhood obesity. Childhood obesity has become a source of great concern. Since 1980, the number of overweight or obese children has tripled. These young people are more likely to be obese as adults and face the resulting consequences later in life. They are also starting to be affected by the same preventable diseases from which their older counterparts suffer, something virtually unheard of before. In addition to the individual cost of obesity, there is also a societal cost. Health care expenses and productivity losses related to obesity cost Americans more than 100 billion dollars each year. Team for Kids is dedicated to raising funds to support programs that combat childhood obesity and empower youth development through running and character-building programs in low-income schools and community centers in New York City, throughout the United States, and in CapeTown, South Africa. All contributions go directly towards running-based fitness, goal-setting, and nutritional programs, which help lower the risk of obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and other serious diseases and help the kids lead healthier, more productive lives. All contributions are tax deductible and can be made via the TFK page on the ING New York City Marathon 2009 page: https://www.nyrrc.org/cgi-bin/start.cgi/mar-programs/nyrrf/team/2009/donations.htm Please be sure to have all contributions list my ING NYC Marathon entry #411751 and last name (Kujala). Each dollar has the opportunity to make a difference for both the life of an individual and society as a whole. I hope you will share my commitment to this very important cause. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you in advance for your support.
Celia"
